How Domicile Affects Your Taxes

Your domicile is your legal home state — the state that has the right to tax your income. As a full-time RVer, you have the ability to choose your domicile state, because you're no longer anchored to one place by a lease or mortgage. By establishing domicile in a state with no income tax — South Dakota, Texas, or Florida being the most popular for nomads — you legally eliminate state income tax on your self-employment income.

The process involves getting a physical address in the new state (via a mail forwarding service), obtaining a driver's license there, and registering to vote. South Dakota is the most popular choice because it can be done in a single trip, has no residency waiting period, and costs about $150/year for mail forwarding — which is often recovered in the first few weeks of tax savings.

One important caveat: states like California, New York, and Massachusetts aggressively enforce residency rules. You'll need to document your travel and ensure you don't spend 183 or more days in a high-tax state in any calendar year.
